Rocket Lab, a private American aerospace manufacturer and smallsat launch service provider, successfully launched a Japanese earth-imaging satellite on 28th November. The mission, named “Running Out of Toes,” took off from Rocket Lab’s New Zealand launch site. The mission’s primary payload was a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite for the Japanese company, Synspective.
SAR technology allows for high-resolution imaging of the Earth’s surface, irrespective of weather conditions or time of day. These capabilities make it useful for a variety of applications, such as monitoring urban development, observing agricultural trends, and assessing damage from natural disasters. The SAR satellite, called StriX-β, is Synspective’s second demonstration unit and follows StriX-α, which was launched in December 2020.
Rocket Lab has been working on reusing the boosters for its Electron rockets to decrease launch costs and increase launch frequency. The first stage of the Electron rocket used in this mission was outfitted with navigation hardware and a reaction control system to guide it back to Earth. However, the company did not attempt to recover the booster from this launch. Instead, it gathered data to inform future recovery efforts.
The “Running Out of Toes” mission is the company’s third launch of 2021 and the 20th launch of its Electron rocket. Rocket Lab aims to increase the frequency of its launches and is building a new launch pad in New Zealand to facilitate this. The company is also working on a larger rocket, Neutron, which will be capable of launching bigger payloads and will also be reusable.
Rocket Lab’s launch was broadcast live on its YouTube channel, allowing viewers worldwide to witness the event. The company has been a prominent player in the private space launch industry, known for its Electron rockets that are specifically designed to launch small satellites or CubeSats. Its ability to offer dedicated rideshare missions gives small satellite operators the opportunity to choose their preferred orbit, providing a significant advantage over traditional rideshare launches.
