Wipro 3D and ISRO Collaborate for Eco-Friendly Space Exploration


The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Wipro 3D have joined forces in a space technology partnership. Their collaboration has resulted in the successful production of a 3D-printed rocket engine, named the PS4, which powers the fourth stage of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). The PSLV is a launch system created to carry earth observation and scientific satellites into precise orbits. These satellites have a variety of uses, including remote sensing, oceanography, cartography, mineral mapping, and disaster warning.

The PS4 stage of the PSLV is crucial for ensuring the accurate placement of satellites into their respective orbits. It is equipped with sophisticated navigation, guidance, and control systems. The PS4 engine’s adaptability is boosted by its ability to restart multiple times and support various payload adapters, making it suitable for different types of spacecraft missions.

Traditionally, the PS4 engine is made using standard machining and welding techniques. However, a major redesign of the engine was accomplished using additive manufacturing technology. This method offers superior precision and minimal resource use, and it significantly reduces material waste and production time.

The collaborative efforts of Wipro 3D and ISRO have led to the implementation of Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) and Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) technology. These techniques allowed for the consolidation of various PS4 engine components into a single unified production unit, enhancing overall production efficiency and structural integrity.

The 3D-printed PS4 engine prioritizes sustainability and efficiency. It features integral complex cooling channels and requires minimal post-print machining operations. The engine underwent rigorous testing at the ISRO Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri, where it met the required design safety and efficiency standards. Key performance metrics assessed included optimal chamber pressure, fuel management, combustion efficiency, and specific impulse (Isp).

This partnership between ISRO and Wipro 3D highlights the potential of advanced manufacturing in the space industry. It also supports ISRO’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, promoting domestic innovation and manufacturing. As the collaboration moves forward, the partners are looking forward to the successful second round of testing.
