Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile have announced their collaboration to launch the “EU Satellite Constellation”. This project aims to extend mobile coverage to more than 1.6 billion people living in regions around the world where connectivity is currently minimal or non-existent. The satellite constellation will offer 4G and 5G services to existing Vodafone customers without requiring any special hardware.
AST SpaceMobile, a US-based company, specializes in space-based cellular broadband networks. The company has already received approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to build a global broadband network in space capable of connecting directly to 4G and 5G smartphones.
The satellite network will be launched in partnership with Vodafone, one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies, and the European Space Agency (ESA). This initiative is a significant step forward for Vodafone, which has been seeking to extend its reach beyond terrestrial networks to ensure more inclusive global connectivity.
The project aims to deploy 243 large, ultra-high performance satellites into low Earth orbit. The satellites will be designed to connect directly with standard smartphones, extending Vodafone’s coverage to the poles, deserts, mountains, and other difficult-to-reach areas, as well as to countries that lack the infrastructure for traditional mobile communication networks.
The partnership with Vodafone will enable the telecom giant to leverage AST SpaceMobile’s technology to provide service in areas where it has not been able to reach before. Vodafone customers will be able to use their current mobile devices to connect to the satellite network when they are outside the range of terrestrial cell towers.
Importantly, AST SpaceMobile’s satellite network will not only provide coverage for Vodafone’s customers, but also for emergency services and disaster recovery efforts. It will also help to bridge the digital divide by providing connectivity to remote and underserved communities, thereby contributing to social and economic development.
The project marks a significant advancement in global mobile connectivity and reinforces the important role that satellite technology plays in achieving universal and affordable internet access. This partnership also underlines the growing trend of collaboration between telecommunication companies and space technology firms to improve and expand internet access worldwide.
