Vietnam Capitalizes on Opportunities to Propel Space Technology Forward

Vietnam is actively seizing opportunities to expand its capabilities in space technology, as it recognizes the significant advantages of space technology applications in numerous fields such as communications, weather forecasting, natural disaster management, and national defense. The Vietnam National Space Centre (VNSC), under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST), is the primary organization spearheading the nation’s efforts in this area.

Working with domestic and international partners, the VNSC is making strides in the development of small satellites, with the goal of mastering the technology and producing such satellites by themselves. The MicroDragon satellite, designed and manufactured by Vietnamese engineers and launched in 2019, is a testament to their progress. The satellite is currently operational and providing data that aids in predicting and mitigating the effects of climate change and natural disasters.

Looking ahead, Vietnam is set to launch the NanoDragon satellite in 2022. NanoDragon is a product of the “Renovation and Creative Innovation 2020” project, which aims to enhance Vietnam’s capacity in the design, production, and testing of microsatellites. This satellite, which is smaller than MicroDragon, will undergo a series of rigorous tests under Japanese standards before its launch.

In addition to the development of small satellites, the VNSC is also focusing on human resource development. The center has sent more than 60 staff members to study and conduct research in advanced countries with developed space technology. This skill enhancement initiative is part of the strategy to develop high-quality human resources capable of independently handling space technology research and application.

Vietnam’s achievements in space technology have been recognized internationally. In 2020, VAST and the VNSC received a certificate of merit from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency for their significant contributions to the success of the Epsilon-4 rocket, which carried the MicroDragon satellite into space. This recognition not only highlights Vietnam’s strides in space technology but also strengthens the nation’s international cooperation in this field.

The Vietnamese government has identified space technology as a critical area for development, acknowledging its potential to boost socio-economic development and national defense. As such, the government is actively supporting efforts to advance space technology, including by investing in infrastructure, fostering international cooperation, and promoting education and training in this field.
