Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX, is preparing for its next rocket launch from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base. The launch is scheduled for 4:34 p.m. PDT today. The rocket being launched is a Falcon 9, a two-stage vehicle designed and manufactured by SpaceX.
The Falcon 9 rocket will be carrying 51 Starlink satellites to low Earth orbit as part of SpaceX’s mission to provide satellite internet connectivity globally. Starlink is a satellite broadband project under SpaceX that aims to provide cheap and accessible internet to people around the world, especially those in rural and underserved areas.
The launch will be the second Starlink mission from the West Coast this month. Earlier in September, SpaceX launched 51 Starlink satellites from the same base. The upcoming launch will bring the total number of Starlink satellites in orbit to more than 1,700.
Weather conditions are favorable for the launch as Vandenberg’s forecast predicts clear skies. However, if the launch is delayed due to technical or weather reasons, SpaceX has a backup launch opportunity on September 30 at the same time.
The Falcon 9 rocket’s first stage booster has flown on previous missions, including transporting astronauts to the International Space Station. After the separation of the satellite payload, SpaceX will attempt to land the booster on a drone ship in the Pacific Ocean, as part of its reusability strategy to reduce costs and waste.
The launch will be broadcast live on SpaceX’s website and YouTube channel. The live stream will start about 15 minutes prior to liftoff. Those in Southern California and the Central Coast may also have the chance to see the Falcon 9 rocket soaring into the sky, depending on local weather conditions.
SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk in 2002, is a pioneer in the commercial spaceflight industry. The company has made significant strides in space exploration and satellite deployment, contributing to advancements in telecommunications, climate monitoring, and scientific research. The Starlink project is a testament to SpaceX’s ambition of expanding internet access globally, which can have significant socio-economic implications.
