UN Survey Reveals African Youngsters Not Fully Utilizing Space Technology’s Possibilities

According to a United Nations survey, African youths are missing out on the potential of space technology. The survey findings indicate that the lack of awareness and knowledge about space science and technology among the youth in Africa is a significant concern. The UN Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) and the African Union Commission (AUC) conducted the survey, which collected responses from 9,000 individuals across Africa, aged between 18 and 35.

The survey’s main objective was to assess the understanding and perception of space science and technology among young people in Africa. It also sought to evaluate their interest and involvement in these fields. The results revealed that 64% of respondents had little to no knowledge about space science and technology. Only 18% reported they were well-informed about the subject.

The lack of access to appropriate educational resources and opportunities for practical experience were cited as significant barriers to the development of space science and technology in Africa. Many respondents reported limited access to internet resources or relevant educational materials, while others pointed to the lack of opportunities for hands-on experience in these fields.

Despite these barriers, the survey found a strong interest in space science and technology among African youth. Approximately 78% of respondents expressed a desire to learn more about these fields, and 72% indicated that they would like to pursue careers in space science or technology. This underscores the potential for the development of space science and technology in Africa, provided there is adequate investment in education and infrastructure.

In addition to providing insights into the perceptions and understanding of space science and technology among African youth, the survey also highlighted the need for increased collaboration and partnership between African countries and international organizations. This can help to develop the necessary infrastructure and educational resources to foster the growth of space science and technology in Africa.

The findings of the survey are expected to inform policy decisions and strategies for the promotion of space science and technology in Africa. The UNOOSA and AUC are also planning to use the survey results to develop tailored programs and initiatives to foster interest and participation in space science and technology among African youth.

The development of space science and technology holds significant potential for Africa. It can contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including those related to education, innovation, and infrastructure. It can also help to address various societal challenges, such as climate change, disaster management, and resource management.

However, realizing this potential requires concerted efforts to raise awareness and build capacity in space science and technology. It also requires the provision of opportunities for practical experience, as well as the development of the necessary infrastructure and resources. This calls for greater investment in education and research, as well as increased collaboration and partnership between African countries and international organizations.
