Turkey’s First Locally-Constructed Communications Satellite Launched by SpaceX

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket successfully launched Türksat 6A, Turkey’s first domestically-built communications satellite, on Monday. The satellite is a powerful relay station constructed to carry secure military communication within Turkish borders and to extend commercial services across India, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The satellite’s production was majorly domestic, with over 81% of the subsystems, ground stations, and accompanying software being made in Turkey utilizing national resources.

The launch of Türksat 6A is a significant achievement for Turkey, as it becomes one of only 12 countries capable of building advanced communications satellites. This milestone was celebrated by Turkish officials, including President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Abdulkadir Uraloglu, the Turkish Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, who referred to the satellite as a symbol of Turkey’s independence and unity in space.

The Falcon 9 rocket was launched from pad 40 at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, albeit slightly delayed due to adverse weather conditions. The first stage of the rocket, marking its 15th flight, was successful in propelling the rocket out of the lower atmosphere and subsequently landing on a SpaceX barge in the Atlantic Ocean. The second stage completed two firings of its single engine, releasing the Türksat 6A satellite into a highly elliptical transfer orbit 35 minutes post-liftoff.

Türksat 6A, operated by Türksat A.Ș., is equipped with 16 Ku-band transponders, with an additional four held in reserve, and three X-band transponders, of which one is a spare. The latter are reserved for domestic military use, while the Ku-band transponders will be utilized for commercial services. The satellite’s onboard thrusters will be used in the ensuing days to circularize the orbit 22,300 miles above the equator. This positioning will allow the satellite to remain stationary in the sky, facilitating the use of fixed ground antennas.

Türksat 6A is expected to significantly enhance satellite coverage, increasing the reach from approximately 3.5 billion people to around five billion by including countries such as India, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. The satellite, which has a design lifespan of 15 years, will build on the coverage provided by earlier satellites which encompassed Europe, the Middle East, Turkic nations, parts of East Asia, and a significant segment of Africa, predominantly North Africa.

This launch marked SpaceX’s 68th Falcon 9 launch this year and the 353rd overall. The California-based rocket manufacturer anticipates launching over 140 Falcon-family rockets this year, setting an unmatched pace in the commercial launch industry.
