Blue Origin, a space exploration venture established by Jeff Bezos, employs the BE-4 engine in its spacecraft, a unique piece of technology that sets it apart from other space companies. The BE-4 is a staged combustion engine fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and is designed to use oxygen-rich conditions to produce a substantial amount of thrust. It is capable of generating 2,400 kilonewtons of lift at sea level, which is essential for launching its crafts into space.

In contrast to most rocket engines that use a highly refined type of kerosene known as Rocket Propellant-1 or Refined Petroleum-1 (RP-1), Blue Origin chose LNG for its cleaner combustion properties. This decision points to Blue Origin’s commitment to environmental considerations, even as it pushes the boundaries of space exploration.

The BE-4 engine is not only utilized by Blue Origin but also serves as the main engine for the United Launch Alliance’s (ULA) Vulcan rocket. On January 8, 2024, the Vulcan Centaur, powered by two BE-4 engines, had its inaugural flight from Cape Canaveral, Florida. While the mission encountered issues with the moon lander, the successful launch and journey to space validated the performance capabilities of the BE-4 engine in a modern rocket setup.

The BE-4 engine also plays a pivotal role in the operation of Blue Origin’s New Glenn heavy-lift rocket. The New Glenn, standing at a staggering 322 feet tall, is designed to transport up to 50 tons of payload into low Earth orbit. To achieve this, the rocket relies on the substantial thrust provided by seven BE-4 engines. The New Glenn’s maiden voyage is currently scheduled for August 2024.
