Three On-Orbit Manufacturing Research Projects Funded by UK Space Agency

The UK Space Agency has granted funding to three projects focused on in-orbit manufacturing research as part of its larger initiative to drive technological advancement in the space sector. This forms part of the government’s broader strategy to make the UK a global leader in space innovation and satellite technology by 2030.

The three projects, which have received a total of £1 million in funding, will explore new manufacturing techniques designed for use in space. These projects aim to develop and test systems for producing materials and structures in the harsh environment of space, which could revolutionize the way we design and build spacecraft, satellites, and other space-based technologies.

The first project, led by the University of Edinburgh, aims to develop an innovative manufacturing system that can produce high-quality metal alloys in space. The project will test this system in microgravity conditions to determine its efficiency and reliability.

The second project, undertaken by London-based company Space Forge, will focus on creating a fully reusable in-orbit manufacturing platform. This project aims to reduce the cost of space missions by designing a system that can manufacture, assemble, and deploy satellites directly in orbit, eliminating the need for costly and energy-intensive ground-based launches.

The third project is led by Oxford-based company Open Cosmos, which aims to develop a method for producing high-performance composite materials in space. This could potentially result in lighter and more durable spacecraft and satellites, which would significantly enhance their performance and lifespan.

These projects represent a significant step forward in the UK’s space sector. They could potentially transform the way we design, build, and deploy space-based technologies, leading to more efficient and cost-effective space missions. Furthermore, these innovations could pave the way for new applications and services that could have significant economic and societal benefits.

The UK Space Agency’s support for these projects highlights the government’s commitment to boosting the country’s space sector. In recent years, the UK has made significant strides in space technology, with several successful satellite launches and the establishment of several new spaceports. These latest projects are expected to further bolster the UK’s position as a leading player in the global space industry.

The funding for these projects forms part of the UK government’s £374 million per year investment in the European Space Agency, aimed at securing the UK’s involvement in international space projects and strengthening its global leadership in space innovation. This is in line with the UK’s National Space Strategy, which seeks to leverage space technology to drive economic growth, national security, and scientific discovery.
