T-CrB Blast Set to Manifest as a ‘New Star’

Astronomers are preparing for a rare and spectacular celestial event: a nova explosion that will be visible to the naked eye. This event will mark the reappearance of a star that hasn’t been seen since 1946. The star is the result of a nova event, a type of explosion that typically occurs once every 80 years. This particular event is expected to inspire a new generation of astronomers, according to NASA’s Rebekah Hounsell, who specializes in nova events.

The nova event is caused by two stars, a red giant and a white dwarf, that orbit each other. The red giant will move behind the white dwarf, triggering an explosion of material that will create a “new star” in the night sky. This explosion is a result of the gravitational interaction between the two stars, which leads to a thermonuclear explosion, creating the nova.

Nova events are usually faint and far away, making them difficult to observe in detail. However, this upcoming event will be close enough to allow detailed observation and study. NASA’s Dr. Elizabeth Hays, chief of the Astroparticle Physics Laboratory at the Goddard Space Flight Center, anticipates that the event will provide valuable data to help understand the structure and processes involved in nova events.

The stars in question are currently behaving similarly to their behavior prior to the last explosion, indicating that the nova event is imminent. Some researchers predict that the event could occur by September 2024. The stars, which make up a binary system, are located 3,000 light-years away from Earth in the Northern Crown constellation. Their system is known as the “Blaze Star,” but is also referred to as T Coronae Borealis or T CrB.

The nova event is a result of the violent interaction between the two stars. The red giant is slowly being stripped of hydrogen due to the gravitational pull of the white dwarf. The hydrogen is drawn to the surface of the white dwarf, building up pressure and heat until it eventually triggers a large explosion. This explosion is powerful enough to get rid of the excess material, creating the nova.

This upcoming celestial event is expected to be a significant moment for both professional and amateur astronomers alike, offering a unique opportunity to observe a rare astronomical event and contribute to our understanding of the universe.
