Stargazing Gear Now Available at Bexley Library

The Bexley Public Library in Ohio has embarked on a new initiative to provide its patrons with the opportunity to explore the cosmos from the comfort of their homes. Recognizing the growing interest in astronomy among the community, the library has introduced stargazing equipment for checkout.

The library’s collection of stargazing equipment includes two Orion StarBlast 4.5″ Astro Reflector telescopes. These are not only easy to use but also powerful enough to provide clear images of celestial bodies. Besides the telescope, the kit includes a guidebook, a headlamp with red and white lights, a planisphere, and a laminated instruction sheet.

This initiative is a result of a collaborative effort between the library and the Columbus Astronomical Society. The society, known for its work in promoting astronomy, provided the library with the necessary equipment and training to manage the telescopes. This partnership exemplifies the library’s commitment to offer educational and recreational resources beyond books.

The telescopes can be checked out for one week at a time and can be renewed once if there are no other patrons on the waiting list. The library is also offering a collection of astronomy books to supplement the telescopes. These books, which range from beginner to advanced levels, can help users understand the basics of stargazing and identify different celestial bodies.

The library hopes that this new offering will not only inspire a love for astronomy but also provide a unique recreational activity for families, especially during these challenging times when many are looking for safe, home-based activities. Patrons are encouraged to share their experiences and discoveries through the library’s social media platforms, fostering a sense of community and shared learning.

In addition to the telescope lending service, the library also organizes astronomy-themed events and workshops. These activities are designed to engage the community and enhance their understanding of the universe. The library’s mission is to foster lifelong learning, and the introduction of the telescope lending service reinforces this commitment.

Although the Bexley Public Library is not the first to offer such a service, it is among a select few that do. This innovative approach to community engagement sets an example for other public libraries and institutions to expand their offerings beyond traditional resources. It reinforces the role of libraries as a hub for community learning and engagement, broadening access to knowledge and experiences.
