SpaceX has progressed further in broadening its Starlink constellation that provides Direct to Cell capability. On Tuesday, the aerospace manufacturer launched its Falcon 9 rocket, carrying 20 satellites, out of which 13 were Direct to Cell-capable Starlink satellites. The launch took place from the Vandenberg Space Force Base and was the 16th of its kind at VSFB in 2024, surpassing half the total number of launches from the previous year.

The Falcon 9 rocket was powered by the 18th reflight of the first stage booster, B1063, from the SpaceX fleet. This booster has a history of launching NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft, the Transporter-7 rideshare, and 12 other Starlink missions. Approximately 8.5 minutes post-launch, the B1063 made a successful landing on SpaceX’s droneship, ‘Of Course I Still Love You.’ This marked the 90th successful landing for the droneship and the 308th landing for a Falcon booster overall.

The SpaceX team reported that the Starlink constellation handled the high solar activity from the recent geomagnetic storm well. Michael Nicolls, the Vice President of Starlink engineering, elaborated on this on social media, noting that even the newly launched satellites managed to endure the extreme conditions, characterized by a 2-3x increase in density at around 300km and even larger relative density changes at higher altitudes.

This launch marks the 35th dedicated Starlink launch for 2024. SpaceX had already launched 768 Starlink satellites in the same year before the Starlink 8-7 mission. According to recent data published by Jonathan McDowell, a renowned orbital tracker and astronomer, there were 5,923 operational Starlink satellites in orbit as of Sunday. SpaceX’s ongoing efforts to expand its Starlink constellation demonstrate its commitment to providing global broadband internet coverage, particularly in underserved areas of the world.
