SpaceX Launches NASA’s Pandora and Additional Smallsats During Inaugural ‘Twilight’ Rideshare Mission

SpaceX recently launched NASA’s Pandora spacecraft as part of its first-ever ‘Twilight’ rideshare mission. The mission, which took place on March 19, 2022, also included the deployment of several other small satellites. The Falcon 9 rocket, which carried the payload, launched from pad 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. This launch marks the 13th Falcon 9 mission of 2022, and the 139th overall Falcon 9 launch.

The ‘Twilight’ rideshare mission is a part of SpaceX’s efforts to offer cost-effective access to space for small satellite operators. This mission, named after the period of twilight during sunrise and sunset, aims to maximize the capabilities of the Falcon 9 rocket by allowing it to carry multiple payloads during a single launch.

Pandora, a NASA-funded small satellite, is a technology demonstration mission designed to validate a new way of measuring X-rays from the stars. It is expected to pave the way for future X-ray observatories that will provide new insights into the physical processes occurring in the outer atmospheres of stars. The Pandora spacecraft will be positioned in a sun-synchronous orbit, which will allow it to maintain a consistent angle relative to the Sun and offer uninterrupted observations of specific stars.

Apart from Pandora, the Falcon 9 rocket also carried several other small satellites. These include the HawkEye 360’s third cluster of radio signal detection satellites, which will form part of a larger constellation designed to monitor and geolocate radio frequency signals globally. Another notable payload is Care Weather Technologies’ SARA satellite, which aims to improve weather forecasting by measuring the temperature and humidity in the Earth’s atmosphere.

The successful deployment of these satellites highlights SpaceX’s commitment to facilitating affordable and reliable access to space for a diverse range of customers. This mission also underscores the growing trend of small satellite rideshare launches, which offer a cost-effective alternative for small satellite operators looking to reach space.

The successful launch and deployment of these satellites will contribute to advancements in various fields, including astrophysics and meteorology. It also showcases the growing capabilities of private space companies like SpaceX, which continue to push the boundaries of space exploration and satellite deployment.
