Replica of Space Station Inspires Students – Emulating the Actual ISS

The US company, Quest Institute for Quality Education, has developed a scaled-down replica of the International Space Station (ISS) with the aim of inspiring students to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. The model, named the Quest for Space ISS module, is a 1:4 scale model of the real ISS.

The model is designed to accurately mimic the environment within the real ISS to provide students with a hands-on experience about life and work in space. It is equipped with an array of scientific instruments, including a carbon dioxide sensor, humidity sensor, temperature sensor, and a camera to monitor the growth of plants.

The Quest for Space ISS module is not just a static display, but a functional model that can conduct experiments remotely. Students can design, build, and test their own experiments using the model, which is controlled from a laptop. As part of the learning process, students are taught how to write code to operate the experiments, giving them a taste of real-world space research.

The Quest Institute has partnered with NASA and the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) to bring the project to fruition. The partnership has enabled the institute to send over 100 student experiments to the real ISS over the past decade. The institute also offers a curriculum that aligns with Next Generation Science Standards, thus ensuring its compatibility with existing school syllabi.

By exposing students to practical space research in this manner, the Quest Institute hopes to inspire the next generation of space scientists. The project seeks to engage students’ curiosity about space exploration and foster a love for STEM subjects. It also helps equip students with the necessary skills they would need to excel in any future space-related career.

The Quest Institute has already seen some success with its initiative. Some students who participated in the program have gone on to pursue careers in the STEM field, with some even working for NASA. This model serves as a great example of how hands-on learning can inspire and motivate students to pursue careers in space science and related fields.

In conclusion, the Quest for Space ISS module offers a unique, hands-on educational tool that aims to inspire and prepare students for careers in space exploration and related fields. It provides a realistic glimpse into the world of space research and the challenges and rewards it presents.
