The Philippines has joined the Artemis Accords, an international agreement that sets out guidelines for responsible and peaceful space exploration and cooperation among nations. The country is the first in Southeast Asia to sign the treaty, which aims to ensure the sustainability of space activities and protect the interests of all countries involved in space exploration. The Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) inked the agreement on behalf of the country, making it the 14th signatory of the Accords alongside countries like the United States, Australia, Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, and others.
The Artemis Accords, initiated by NASA, aim to set a standard of behaviour for nations involved in space exploration. It encourages transparency, interoperability, and adherence to the principle that space exploration should benefit all humankind. The Accords also directly support the Artemis Program, NASA’s initiative to return humans to the moon by 2024 and establish a sustainable human presence there by the end of the decade.
By signing the Artemis Accords, the Philippines has committed to abide by principles such as the peaceful use of outer space, emergency assistance to astronauts in distress, and the registration of space objects. Additionally, the agreement promotes the protection of heritage sites and artifacts in space, the sharing of scientific data, and the responsible disposal of space debris.
This move aligns with the Philippines’ National Space Policy, which outlines the country’s strategic roadmap for space development and addresses national security, hazard management, and climate change. Moreover, it complements the Philippine Space Act, enacted in 2019, which seeks to establish a national space development program and set up PhilSA.
PhilSA’s Executive Director, Joel Joseph Marciano Jr., believes that the country’s participation in the Artemis Accords will foster international partnerships and collaborations in space science, technology, and applications. It would also help the Philippines strengthen its capabilities and knowledge in space science and technology.
The participation in the Artemis Accords is a significant milestone for the Philippines, marking its official entry into the global space community. It could potentially open up opportunities for Filipino scientists and researchers to participate in international space projects and contribute to the global understanding of space.
