NASA and the Department of Energy Plan to Build a Lunar Surface Reactor by 2030

NASA and the US Department of Energy (DOE) have announced a collaboration to develop a nuclear power system for the lunar surface by 2030. The system is expected to improve the sustainability of future lunar missions by providing reliable and efficient power. This initiative is part of NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the moon by the end of the decade.

The DOE’s Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and NASA’s space technology mission directorate are working together on the project. The plan involves developing a fission surface power system, a type of nuclear reactor, to facilitate the exploration of the moon’s surface and potentially other celestial bodies in the future. The reactor will be capable of producing 10 kilowatts of power, which is enough to power several average homes.

The lunar surface reactor will not only provide power for human and robotic missions but also for the processing of resources like water and minerals from the moon. The availability of a stable and efficient power source is crucial for these operations. It will also help in the functioning of life-support systems, and it will enable the operation of equipment during the lunar night, which lasts for about two weeks.

NASA and the DOE have released a request for proposals for the demonstration unit of the reactor. The demonstration will include a ground test to ensure the system’s overall safety and functionality before being deployed to the moon. The ground testing is expected to be completed by 2026, while the deployment to the lunar surface is planned for 2030.

The development of the lunar surface reactor is a significant step in the Artemis program, which aims to use the moon as a stepping-stone to Mars. The program also includes the development of the Gateway, a small spaceship that will orbit around the moon and serve as a home base for astronauts. The Gateway will support scientific research and provide an access point to the lunar surface.

The collaboration between NASA and the DOE highlights the important role of nuclear power in space exploration. Nuclear power provides a reliable and efficient source of energy that can withstand the harsh conditions of space. The development of the lunar surface reactor will be a crucial element in the advancement of human space exploration.
