Milestone in Space Technology Reached with the Launch of Green Propulsion System by DRDO

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) of India has successfully launched a Green Propulsion System for micro satellites. This new technology, developed under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme of DRDO, has been achieved through a payload launched by Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) C-58.

The Green Propulsion System project, known as the 1N Class Green Monopropellant thruster, is designed for altitude control and orbit maintenance of micro satellites. The project was sanctioned to the Bengaluru-based start-up Bellatrix Aerospace Pvt Ltd. The telemetry data from the PSLV Orbital Experimental Module (POEM) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC), Bengaluru, was validated and found to have surpassed all performance parameters.

This new technology is noteworthy for being non-toxic and environmentally-friendly, marking a significant step forward for low-orbit space propulsion systems. The system comprises of a range of indigenously developed components such as Propellant, Fill and Drain Valves, Latch Valve, Solenoid Valve, Catalyst Bed, and Drive Electronics. The system is especially suited for space missions that require high thrust.

The entire project was executed under the guidance of the Project Monitoring and Mentoring Group of DRDO. It demonstrated pulsed mode and steady state firing in vacuum, passivation of residual propellant in outer space, and established a propellant realization and filling procedure under the TDF scheme.

This achievement in green propulsion technology represents a significant advancement in space technology, providing a sustainable and efficient solution for the propulsion of micro satellites. The successful launch of this system paves the way for future space missions that prioritize environmental sustainability without compromising performance.
