Malawi Space Stars Campaign Initiated by Daka Space Technologies Limited

Malawi’s first technology startup, Daka Space Technologies Limited, has initiated the Malawi Space Stars Campaign to promote awareness about space technology and related career opportunities. The campaign is financially backed by the UK’s Royal Academy of Engineering and is aimed at secondary school students, especially those studying science subjects.

Chisomo Daka, the founder and CEO of Daka Space Technologies, spoke at Likuni Girls Secondary School in Lilongwe about the potential of space science and technology. He highlighted the role of space technology in areas such as disaster management, national security, precision agriculture, and weather monitoring. He also shared his experience of leading a team to deploy a payload in space while pursuing his Masters of Science and Physics in India.

Citing the Agenda 2063 for Africa, which saw the establishment of the African Union’s space agency in 2020, Daka highlighted the need for Malawi to set up its own space agency. He praised President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s efforts in this direction, noting that a task force has been established to explore the possibility. He emphasized the importance of raising awareness and inspiring the younger generation to pursue careers in space science and technology.

Jean Kingstone Chimbiya, the Deputy Head Teacher at Likuni Girls Secondary School, noted the campaign’s potential to encourage students to study science subjects and make informed decisions about their future education. The campaign aligns with Malawi’s broader goals to advance in science and technology, and positions the country as a potential leader in the African space technology sector.
