Live Broadcast: Saturday’s Starlink Mission set to Break SpaceX’s 2024 Orbital Launch Record

SpaceX is on the verge of surpassing its record for the most orbital launches in a year, with a planned Starlink mission scheduled for Saturday. This will be the company’s 25th launch for the year, exceeding its previous record of 24 launches in 2020. The Falcon 9 rocket, carrying the next batch of Starlink internet satellites, will lift off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The upcoming mission will add to SpaceX’s rapidly growing constellation of Starlink satellites, which are designed to provide broadband internet service from space. The company has already launched more than 1,500 Starlink satellites and has approval from the Federal Communications Commission to operate up to 12,000. SpaceX is also seeking approval to launch as many as 30,000 additional satellites to further bolster its network.

The achievement of a new launch record underscores the growing operational tempo of SpaceX, driven by its Starlink project and customer payloads. SpaceX’s 2021 launch manifest includes a mix of Starlink missions, cargo flights to the International Space Station, satellite launches for customers, and test flights of the company’s new Starship vehicle.

The Falcon 9 rocket’s first stage booster, which has already flown on seven previous missions, will be used for the upcoming Starlink launch. Following the launch, the booster will return to Earth and land on a drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean, demonstrating SpaceX’s ability to reuse rocket stages and reduce launch costs.

The weather forecast for Saturday’s launch is promising, with a 70% chance of favorable conditions at the launch site. If the launch is postponed due to weather or technical issues, SpaceX has a backup launch opportunity on Sunday.

The launch will be streamed live on SpaceX’s website and YouTube channel, allowing space enthusiasts around the world to follow the event in real time.

In addition to its launch record, SpaceX has also made significant progress in other areas this year. The company successfully launched and landed a full-size prototype of its Starship vehicle, which is designed to carry humans to the Moon, Mars, and beyond. SpaceX also launched its first all-civilian orbital mission, Inspiration4, in September.

SpaceX’s achievements in 2021 highlight the company’s growing dominance in the space industry and its commitment to advancing space technology and exploration. The upcoming Starlink launch will be another significant milestone in SpaceX’s mission to revolutionize space travel and provide global internet connectivity.
