Joint Venture between Bahrain and Egypt Earns Place in Chinese Lunar Exploration Mission


Bahrain’s National Space Science Authority (NSSA) and Egypt are collaborating on a project set for the Chang’e-7 lunar exploration mission, a global competition organized by the Chinese Space Agency, scheduled for 2026. This collaboration is a product of a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two countries in 2022, which aims to push the boundaries of scientific exploration.

The project’s main objective is to study the soil composition of the moon’s south pole, with an emphasis on detecting the presence of water ice. A key component of this initiative is the creation, comprehensive testing, and eventual deployment of a high-tech multispectral camera. This camera is designed to conduct a detailed analysis of materials on the lunar surface. This achievement reflects the advanced capabilities of Arab nations in lunar exploration and demonstrates their ability to compete at an international level in space science.

Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Asiri, the CEO of NSSA, praised this accomplishment as a strong demonstration of the potential of Arab collaboration in leading future space missions. Similarly, Professor Dr. Sherif Sedqy, CEO of the Egyptian Space Agency, stressed the importance of this victory in enhancing international collaboration and advancing space exploration missions.

The project also features groundbreaking technology that could provide valuable insights into the moon’s resources, as per Dr. Ayman Mahmoud, Director General of the Space Payloads Department at the Egyptian Space Agency. On the other hand, Engineer Aisha Al Haram, Head of the Satellite Design Department at NSSA, underscored the intricate technical complexities of the project. She also emphasized its potential to boost Bahrain’s capabilities in space exploration, paving the way for future research and economic development opportunities.

This collaboration between Bahrain and Egypt is seen as a significant stride in Arab cooperation in space science and exploration. It also exhibits the growing interest and capabilities of Arab countries in the global space arena, pushing the boundaries of what’s achievable in scientific exploration.
