ISS Crew Greets Newly Selected NASA Astronaut Candidates

The International Space Station (ISS) crew has extended a warm welcome to the new astronaut candidates selected by NASA. The 2021 astronaut class, also known as the ‘Turtles’, includes 10 men and women who will undergo two years of intense training before they are eligible for space assignments.

The new astronaut candidates were delighted to receive congratulatory messages from the ISS crew. Astronaut Mark Vande Hei, currently onboard the ISS, acknowledged the hard work and dedication that the new candidates have put into reaching this point in their careers. He encouraged them to continue striving for excellence and to stay motivated for the training and missions that lay ahead.

The latest astronaut class was chosen from a pool of more than 12,000 applicants, reflecting NASA’s rigorous selection process. The candidates possess a diverse range of skills and backgrounds, including expertise in fields such as aeronautics, medicine, geology, and marine biology. This diversity reflects NASA’s commitment to assembling a multidisciplinary team capable of undertaking a wide range of tasks on the ISS and future missions.

The selected candidates will undergo extensive training that includes learning Russian (the second official language of the ISS), undergoing physical training, and obtaining skills in robotics and operational systems of the ISS. They will also learn how to perform spacewalks and will undergo survival training for potential landings on harsh terrains.

The ‘Turtles’ will join a long legacy of astronauts contributing to space exploration. Over the years, astronauts have played pivotal roles in a variety of missions, including the Apollo Moon landings, the Space Shuttle program, and the ongoing operation of the ISS.

Future missions for these astronauts could include the Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the moon by 2024. They might also participate in the Mars mission, which is part of NASA’s long-term goal of sending humans to the Red Planet.

NASA’s commitment to space exploration is not only about scientific discovery and technological advancement. It also aims to inspire the next generation of explorers and innovators. The selection and training of new astronaut candidates play a crucial role in fulfilling this vision.

In conclusion, the new astronaut candidates have embarked on an exciting journey that will test their skills, resilience, and teamwork. Their training and future missions will contribute significantly to our understanding of space and may pave the way for future manned missions to Mars.
