Ispace and Orbital Space Set to Initiate Student-Driven Moon Missions

Japanese lunar exploration company, Ispace, has partnered with Orbital Space, the first private company in the Middle East to provide access to space through CubeSat technology. The collaboration aims to launch student-led lunar missions, in an effort to promote the involvement of young scientists and engineers in space exploration. The initiative will provide opportunities for students to learn and participate in real-life lunar missions, thereby encouraging the development of skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The partnership will see Ispace’s lunar lander and rovers used as a platform for these student-led missions. Orbital Space will manage the integration of the student payload into the lunar lander, and will also facilitate the launch of the lunar missions. The target launch date for the first mission is set for 2024.

The initiative is part of the Orbital Space “DREAM” program, which stands for “Develop, Realize, Engage, Achieve, and Motivate”. This program is designed to allow students and young professionals in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to gain access to space through CubeSat missions.

The lunar missions will be the first in the MENA region to be driven by students, marking a significant milestone in space exploration in the area. The project aims to inspire the youth in the region to pursue careers in the space industry and contribute towards the global efforts in space exploration.

The collaboration between Ispace and Orbital Space is seen as a significant step towards enhancing the capacity of the MENA region in the field of space science and technology. It will not only provide practical experiences for students but also foster international collaborations and partnerships in space exploration.

Moreover, this partnership aligns with the broader global trend of democratizing access to space. It reflects the growing interest and participation of non-traditional space nations in lunar exploration and other space activities. The involvement of students in such initiatives can help to cultivate a new generation of space scientists and engineers, contributing to the long-term sustainability of space exploration efforts.

In summary, the collaboration between Ispace and Orbital Space represents a significant development in lunar exploration. It offers a unique opportunity for students in the MENA region to participate in actual lunar missions, fostering their interest and skills in the field of space science and technology. By democratizing access to space, the initiative is expected to inspire a new generation of space scientists and engineers, contributing to the global efforts in space exploration.
