Innovative Milestones and the Debut of Pakistan’s Latest Satellite – An OpEd Analysis


The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), Pakistan’s national space agency, recently accomplished a significant milestone by launching i-Cube Qamar, the country’s first lunar probe. The mission, supported by China and launched from the Hainan Space Site, captured and transmitted the first images from the moon’s orbit, providing valuable data about the moon’s topography. i-Cube Qamar’s successful deployment makes Pakistan the sixth country globally to send a probe to the moon.

Continuing its space exploration efforts, SUPARCO has announced plans to launch a new satellite, named Institutionalized Singularly Synthesized (MM1), on 30th May. The MM1 satellite’s primary goal is to enhance Pakistan’s communication systems. The satellite comes at a crucial time as the demand for fast internet access and reliable wired communications is rapidly increasing, especially with the impending rollout of 5G technology.

SUPARCO’s work has been instrumental in bolstering Pakistan’s space exploration capabilities. Among its many achievements are the successful development and launch of indigenous experimental satellites, communication satellites, and earth observation satellites. In keeping with the Convention on Registration of Objects Launched into Outer Space – 1975, SUPARCO maintains an updated national space objects register and informs the concerned UN body of its operations prior to execution.
