Hungarian Innovation: Device for Detecting Water May Soon Operate on the Moon

Hungarian company Puli Space Technologies has developed an instrument, named the Lunar Water Snooper, that could play a crucial role in future space exploration. The device, which has been recognised by NASA, is set to be launched on the Moon later this year as part of Intuitive Machines’ IM-2 mission. The Lunar Water Snooper is designed to measure the surface layer’s hydrogen reserves, a process that could potentially help provide water for astronauts and rocket fuel for future missions.

The instrument is impressively compact, measuring just 10×10×3.4 centimeters and weighing only 40 decagrams. Despite its small size, it is capable of fulfilling a vital role in space exploration. As Dr. Tibor Pacher, founder and CEO of Puli Space Technologies, stated, the company is proud to contribute to lunar surface exploration and excited to open up more opportunities for humanity in this field.

Founded in 2010, Puli Space Technologies is a Budapest-based company that aims to be part of the rapidly expanding private lunar industry. Among its developments are a low-cost, lightweight lunar rover with unique mobility capabilities and instrumentation capable of surviving the extreme lunar environment and identifying resources.

The Lunar Water Snooper could also be a contender in the European Space Agency’s (ESA) call for low-budget lunar missions. If successful, this would further enhance Hungary’s standing in the global space exploration arena, with the results of the competition expected to be announced in April.

In addition to the Lunar Water Snooper, Puli Space Technologies was part of a significant space history event in January, when Astrobotic Technology launched the Peregrine lander. Although the Peregrine failed to reach its destination due to a fuel leak, it exceeded the distance to the Moon, gathering valuable data and testing payloads that could be crucial for future lunar landings.

The Lunar Water Snooper represents not just a significant technological achievement, but also a testament to community collaboration. It is an example of the powerful contemporary Hungarian spirit in space exploration, an area where the country continues to make significant strides.
