Hubble Captures the Glowing Core of the Cosmic Cigar – Space Research

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has captured a stunning image of the core of Messier 82 (M82), also known as the Cigar Galaxy, providing astronomers with a detailed glimpse into the heart of this celestial body. The image showcases the galaxy’s blazing core, which is ablaze with young stars and gas clouds fuelled by a supermassive black hole.

M82 is a starburst galaxy, characterized by an intense rate of star formation. It is located about 12 million light-years away in the Ursa Major constellation. Its cigar-like appearance, from which it derives its nickname, is due to its elongated shape caused by gravitational interactions with its larger neighbor, M81.

The Hubble image reveals the galaxy’s smoldering core, where the rate of star birth is ten times faster than in our own Milky Way galaxy. This star formation is facilitated by the galaxy’s central region’s supermassive black hole, which pulls in matter and generates tremendous energy, which then triggers the birth of new stars.

The image also shows dramatic plumes of hydrogen gas that are being expelled from the galaxy. As young stars are formed, intense stellar winds and supernova explosions drive this gas outwards, creating these spectacular outflows that extend over tens of thousands of light-years.

The discovery of these outflows in the 1980s was a surprise to astronomers because it was the first time they had seen a galaxy propelling matter into intergalactic space. These outflows play a crucial role in the evolution of galaxies, as they can strip the galaxy of the gas it needs to continue forming stars, thereby affecting its future growth and development.

M82 is a popular target for astronomers due to its relative proximity to Earth and its rapid star formation, which offers a unique opportunity to study the processes that drive starburst activity.

The image was captured by Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3, which was installed on the telescope during its final servicing mission in 2009. This camera has significantly improved Hubble’s capabilities, allowing it to capture images in greater detail and over a wider field of view than ever before.

In conclusion, the latest image from the Hubble Space Telescope offers valuable insights into the heart of the Cigar Galaxy. It provides a vivid illustration of the intense star formation occurring within its core and the dramatic outflows of gas that this activity generates. As such, it contributes significantly to our understanding of starburst galaxies and their role in the broader cosmos.
