The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has been actively contributing towards global disaster management efforts by sharing essential satellite data, according to a government statement. ISRO’s satellite data, which includes real-time imagery and digital data, has been instrumental in disaster risk reduction and management worldwide. The data provided by the ISRO has been used to manage and mitigate the effects of various natural disasters like cyclones, earthquakes, floods, and forest fires.
ISRO is a member of the International Charter ‘Space and Major Disasters’, a collaborative initiative that allows space agencies worldwide to share satellite data to aid in disaster management. The Charter aims to provide timely and reliable data during crises to help civil protection authorities and the international humanitarian community. ISRO joined the Charter in 2001 as its 10th member and has been the Charter’s Chair twice, in 2007 and in 2015.
The ISRO also interacts and shares data with global institutions like the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and the Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT). This collaboration aids in enhancing the analytical capabilities of satellite data and converting it into actionable information. ISRO’s data is particularly useful in the planning and implementation of disaster response, recovery, and mitigation activities.
In addition to this, ISRO also offers disaster management support through its own National Database for Emergency Management (NDEM). NDEM is a geospatial database that aids in decision making during disasters, by providing timely and accurate information about the affected areas.
Moreover, ISRO has also launched several earth observation satellites which provide valuable data for various applications, including weather forecasting, climate studies, agricultural applications, urban planning, and disaster management. These satellites are equipped with state-of-the-art sensors that capture high-resolution imagery of the earth’s surface, which is crucial in monitoring and managing disasters.
In a nutshell, ISRO’s efforts in providing crucial satellite data are making significant contributions to global disaster management efforts. These initiatives not only showcase ISRO’s technological prowess but also highlight its commitment to using space technology for the betterment of humanity. The sharing of satellite data in times of disasters is a crucial step towards global collaboration in disaster management and mitigation.
