First Non-Chinese Astronaut on Tiangong Space Station Hails from Pakistan

Pakistan and China are set to make history in the field of space exploration. A Pakistani astronaut will be the first foreigner to board China’s Tiangong Space Station, following an agreement between the two nations. This marks an unprecedented level of cooperation in space exploration between the two countries and is an important milestone for Pakistan’s space programme.

The Tiangong Space Station, developed by the China National Space Administration (CNSA), is set to be fully operational by 2022. The space station is anticipated to become a key international hub for scientific research and exploration. The station will have a lifespan of approximately ten years and will be open to astronauts from all over the world.

The Pakistani astronaut, yet to be named, will be sent to the space station under an agreement between Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) and CNSA. This partnership is a key component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, a collection of infrastructure projects worth $62 billion. The CPEC is part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and economic development.

The exact timeline and other details about the Pakistani astronaut’s mission to the Tiangong Space Station are yet to be announced. However, it is worth noting that the astronaut will undergo rigorous training in China before the mission. The training will include survival skills, scientific research skills, emergency response, and spacecraft operation, among others.

This move signifies a significant step for Pakistan’s space programme, which has been relatively quiet compared to other space-faring nations. The country launched its first satellite, Badr-1, in 1990 and has since launched a few more, including communication and remote sensing satellites. However, sending an astronaut to a space station will be a first for the nation. This mission will likely boost Pakistan’s space technology capabilities and open doors for further collaboration with other countries.

In conclusion, the agreement between Pakistan and China to send a Pakistani astronaut to the Tiangong Space Station is a significant development in the field of space exploration. Not only does it represent a strengthening of ties between the two nations, but it also marks Pakistan’s first foray into manned space missions. This mission, along with the ongoing collaboration between CNSA and SUPARCO, is expected to catalyse advancements in space technology and research in both countries.
