First Collaborative Space Mission between U.S. and India to Provide Exceptionally Detailed Earth Imagery

The first joint mission between the U.S. and India, named NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar), is set to provide an unprecedented, detailed view of Earth. The mission, which will be launched in 2022, aims to observe and measure some of the planet’s most complex processes, including ecosystem disturbances, ice-sheet collapse, and natural hazards such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and landslides.

The satellite will orbit the Earth every twelve days, which will allow it to capture an image of each location on the planet at least once every twelve days. This will provide scientists with a continuous and up-to-date view of the changes taking place on the Earth’s surface.

The NISAR mission is unique because it is the first time a dual-frequency synthetic aperture radar will be used on a satellite.
