SpaceX successfully launched a Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on February 15, 2022. The primary mission of the launch was to deploy a group of 51 Starlink satellites into an orbit inclined 53.2 degrees to the equator. This marked the third time that SpaceX sent Starlink satellites into orbit from the West Coast.
The Falcon 9 rocket lifted off at 9:44 p.m. PST, and the first stage separated from the second stage around two and a half minutes later. The first stage then descended back to earth and landed on the drone ship “Of Course I Still Love You” stationed in the Pacific Ocean, marking the 109th recovery of a Falcon first stage.
Meanwhile, the second stage carried on with its mission to deploy the satellites. Approximately 15 minutes after the launch, the second stage engine shut down, and a few moments later, the Starlink satellites were released into orbit. This was the 19th batch of Starlink satellites launched by SpaceX, bringing the total number of these satellites launched to more than 2,000.
Starlink is a project by SpaceX that aims to provide high-speed internet service across the globe using a constellation of small, low-Earth orbit satellites. These satellites are designed to beam broadband signals to user terminals on the ground, which can be set up by customers in their homes or offices.
The recent launch was part of SpaceX’s plan to expand the Starlink network to cover more regions of the world. The company has already received permission from the Federal Communications Commission to launch up to 12,000 Starlink satellites. SpaceX also has requested approval to launch an additional 30,000 satellites to further expand the Starlink network.
SpaceX’s Starlink project has already started providing internet service in several regions, including parts of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other European countries. The service is particularly beneficial for rural and remote areas where traditional ground-based internet service is not available or is unreliable.
The latest launch was the sixth Falcon 9 mission of 2022 for SpaceX, indicating the company’s aggressive launch schedule. SpaceX has a number of upcoming missions, including launches for commercial customers, NASA, and the U.S. military, along with more Starlink deployments.
