Expanding Role of Saudi Space Technology in Conflict and Disaster Areas: Insights from an NSG Executive

The role of Saudi Arabian space technology in conflict and disaster zones is escalating, according to an executive at National Space Group (NSG). The kingdom’s space program is playing a pivotal role in delivering vital information for disaster management and military operations. The high-resolution satellite imagery and data provided by Saudi satellites, including the SaudiSat-5A and SaudiSat-5B, are increasingly being used for environmental monitoring, urban planning, and security purposes, both domestically and internationally.

Saudi Arabia, with its advanced space technology, is emerging as a significant player in the domain of space economy. Despite the kingdom’s relative newness to the sector, it has made remarkable strides and is currently working on launching 13 satellites by 2030. The Saudi Space Commission, established in 2018, plays an essential role in setting and implementing the kingdom’s space strategy. The Commission also aims to increase the country’s local content from 3% to 36% by 2030.

The Saudi Arabian space program has not only contributed to the country’s economic diversification efforts but also significantly influenced the management of conflict and disaster zones. The satellite imagery and data assist in providing real-time information, which is crucial for decision-making during crises. It aids in mapping disaster-stricken areas, assessing the damage, and planning effective and swift responses. Moreover, the data provided by the satellites also support military operations, notably in conflict-prone areas.

Saudi Arabia is also collaborating with international partners to enhance its space capabilities. The kingdom has signed several agreements with countries including Russia, China, India, and the United Arab Emirates, aiming to foster international cooperation in space exploration and satellite technology. The partnerships aim to exchange knowledge, experience, and technology, thereby further strengthening Saudi Arabia’s space program.

In addition to disaster and conflict management, Saudi space technology is also contributing to environmental protection efforts. The high-resolution imagery allows for close monitoring of ecological changes, climate change impacts, and natural resource management. The satellite data can help track desertification, deforestation, and other environmental issues, aiding in the development of effective conservation strategies.

The growth of Saudi’s space technology not only represents a significant advancement for the kingdom but also contributes to the global space economy, estimated to be worth more than $400 billion. By investing in space technology, Saudi Arabia is positioning itself as a key player in this rapidly growing sector, providing critical services for disaster management, military operations, environmental monitoring, and more. The kingdom’s advancements in space technology also align with its Vision 2030, aiming to diversify its economy and reduce its dependency on oil.
