European Space Agency Shortlists Spaceport Cornwall for INVICTUS Hypersonic Test Programme

The European Space Agency (ESA) has shortlisted Spaceport Cornwall for its INVICTUS hypersonic test programme. The INVICTUS project is a demonstration of the feasibility and potential of high-speed commercial air travel, with a focus on hypersonic speeds. This comes as the commercial space industry is gaining momentum, with companies such as SpaceX and Blue Origin leading the way.

Spaceport Cornwall, located at Cornwall Airport Newquay, is one of the UK’s most advanced commercial spaceports. It is currently undergoing a multi-million-pound upgrade to accommodate commercial space launches. If selected by the ESA, the spaceport will test the INVICTUS vehicle, which can reach speeds of Mach 5.

INVICTUS is a reusable hypersonic vehicle designed to travel at speeds greater than Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound. The vehicle is being developed by Reaction Engines, a UK-based company specialising in advanced propulsion systems. The programme aims to demonstrate the feasibility of hypersonic air travel, which could drastically cut travel times for long-distance flights.

The ESA’s decision to shortlist Spaceport Cornwall for this programme highlights the growing recognition of the UK’s capabilities in space exploration and commercial space travel. The UK government has set ambitious targets for the space sector, aiming to capture 10% of the global space market by 2030. The INVICTUS programme could be a significant step towards achieving this goal.

The inclusion of Spaceport Cornwall in the shortlist also underscores the importance of developing infrastructure to support the growing commercial space industry. Spaceports provide the necessary facilities and services for launching and landing spacecraft, including regulatory oversight, safety measures, and logistical support. As the commercial space industry continues to expand, the role of spaceports like Cornwall will become increasingly important.

The ESA’s decision is expected to be made in the coming months. If selected, Spaceport Cornwall will become a key testing site for one of the most exciting and innovative projects in aviation and space travel. The potential impact on the UK’s space sector and the broader commercial space industry cannot be overstated. The successful demonstration of hypersonic travel could revolutionise the way we travel, drastically reducing travel times and potentially making space travel more accessible.

In conclusion, the shortlisting of Spaceport Cornwall for the ESA’s INVICTUS programme is a significant recognition of the UK’s potential in the commercial space industry. The selection of the spaceport for the testing of the hypersonic vehicle would not only boost the UK’s space sector but could also pave the way for faster and more efficient global travel.
