Editorial Perspective: Isro Delivers a Massive Blow – An Unprecedented Achievement

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched CMS-01, its new communication satellite, marking its first mission in 2020. The satellite was launched from the second launch pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota, in Andhra Pradesh, through the PSLV-C50 rocket.

The CMS-01 is primarily designed to provide services in Extended-C Band of the frequency spectrum, covering the Indian mainland, Andaman-Nicobar, and Lakshadweep islands. It is expected to augment the country’s spectrum usage and internet connectivity. The satellite will replace the ageing GSAT-12 satellite, launched in 2011, and is expected to have a lifespan of over seven years.

The launch of CMS-01 displays India’s continuing efforts to advance its space program and its growing capabilities in satellite technology. This achievement is also a testament to ISRO’s resilience amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which had delayed numerous space missions worldwide.

The CMS-01 mission is particularly significant as it comes after the failure of the GSAT-30 mission, where the communication satellite could not be placed in the correct orbit. Although ISRO has a high success rate, this incident underlines the complexities and risks associated with satellite launches.

Despite the challenges, ISRO has ambitious plans for the future. It aims to launch the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV), the country’s first private sector-built rocket, in early 2021. The space agency is also planning to operationalize the Geo Imaging Satellite (GISAT) and the advanced communication satellite GSAT-12R.

ISRO’s determination to pursue its space mission despite the pandemic and past failures shows India’s commitment to becoming a global space power. It also demonstrates the country’s dedication to utilizing space technology for the betterment of its citizens.

The success of the CMS-01 mission is a significant step towards India’s space ambitions. As the country continues to develop its technology and capabilities, it can look forward to contributing more significantly to the global space community. For India, each successful launch is not just a technological achievement, but a giant punch that asserts its place in the rapidly evolving space age.

In conclusion, the successful launch of the CMS-01 satellite is a significant milestone for ISRO and India’s space program. It also serves as a testament to the country’s resilience and determination in advancing its technology and capabilities in space exploration. The future looks promising as ISRO continues to push boundaries and pave the way for more significant contributions to the global space community.
