India is emerging as a global leader in space technology and renewable energy, with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman, S. Somnath, predicting that the Indian space industry could be worth $9-10 billion in the next 5-10 years. The country is the third-largest energy consumer in the world and similarly ranks third in annual oil usage. According to the International Renewable Energy 2023 Statistics, India is currently in fourth place globally for both renewable energy installed capacity and wind energy.

The success of India’s Chandrayaan-3 and Aditya-L1 missions has sparked a renewed interest in the space industry, particularly among the younger generation. India is globally recognised as a significant player in the space sector, standing fourth behind the United States, Russia, and Europe. This growing industry offers numerous career opportunities including roles as astronauts, aerospace engineers, data scientists, research scientists, satellite engineers, spacecraft engineers, remote sensing scientists, ground station engineers, and astrophysicists.

Astronauts, who are trained scientists deployed on spacecraft to conduct experiments and gather information, can earn an average yearly pay of around Rs 7.10 LPA in India. Aerospace engineers, responsible for designing, developing, testing, and producing aircraft and spacecraft, can expect to earn between Rs 4,00,000 to Rs 10,00,000 per annum. Remote sensing scientists, who gather data about the planet’s surface from a distance using various imaging technologies, can earn between Rs 3.7 lakh and Rs 12.0 lakh per annum. Satellite engineers, who provide technical support for ground systems and satellites, can expect a starting salary of about Rs 3.0 lakh per year. Astrophysicists, who specialise in studying space, stars, planets, and the cosmos, can earn between INR 6 to 15 lakhs per year at ISRO, depending on their experience and position.

The green energy sector in India also offers a wide range of career opportunities. With the increasing importance of sustainable living, there is a growing demand for renewable energy sources such as thermal, biomass, wind, solar, and tidal energy. Engineering graduates can pursue careers as solar engineers, project managers, chief environmental engineers, energy analysts, waste management analysts, sustainability development engineers, recycle technicians, and wind farm designers. For instance, solar engineers, who specialise in the design, development, installation, and maintenance of solar energy systems, can earn an average annual income of Rs 4.2 lakh with 4–9 years of experience and Rs 6.1 lakh with 10–20 years of experience.

To pursue these careers, candidates can enroll in bachelor’s, master’s, and research-level programs in subjects such as aeronautics, astrophysics, aviation, aerospace, and aeronautical engineering at various institutions and universities in India. The growth of these sectors is also likely to boost the demand for such courses in the country.
