The Long March 5, the tallest rocket in Chinese space history, has made a significant breakthrough. The rocket, also known as Chang Zheng 5, stands at 57 meters tall, outmatching other Chinese rockets in terms of height and payload capacity. It is part of China’s new generation of carrier rockets and has been designed to support the country’s lunar exploration program, manned space station project, and future deep-space exploration.
The Long March 5 has a payload capacity of 25 tons to low Earth orbit (LEO) and 14 tons to geostationary transfer orbit (GTO). This makes it one of the world’s most powerful rockets, standing alongside the American Delta-IV Heavy and Falcon Heavy rockets. The rocket’s heavy-lift capacity is vital for China’s space ambitions, including the planned construction of a modular space station and potential future crewed missions to the moon and Mars.
The latest launch of the Long March 5 was conducted at the Wenchang Spacecraft Launch Site, in Hainan province, marking its fifth launch. The rocket carried an experimental reusable spacecraft into space, although the nature and purpose of the mission are not yet publicly disclosed.
The Long March 5’s development and launch are critical to the progress of China’s space program. The rocket’s first flight in 2016 was successful, but the second flight in 2017 suffered a failure due to a problem with one of its engines. However, after upgrades and improvements, the following two launches in 2019 and 2020 were successful, enabling the rocket to regain its reputation and re-establish confidence in its reliability.
While the Long March 5 is the largest rocket currently in service in China, the country is developing an even larger rocket, the Long March 9. Once completed, this super-heavy-lift rocket will have the capacity to send 50 tons of payload to lunar orbit, which will be instrumental in China’s future lunar missions and deep-space exploration. This indicates China’s commitment to advancing its space capabilities and becoming a major player in space exploration.
The success of the Long March 5 and the ongoing development of the Long March 9 highlight the rapid progress of China’s space program. These achievements not only demonstrate China’s technological capabilities but also its ambition to become a leading space-faring nation. With further developments and successes, China is expected to continue making significant strides in space exploration in the years to come.
