China’s Beidou triumph clouded by rocket booster incident


China reached a significant milestone in its space program on Monday with the successful launch of two cutting-edge Beidou satellites. The Long March 3B rocket, featuring the advanced Yuanzheng-1 upper stage, took off from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center at 10:26 pm Eastern on December 25 (0326 UTC, December 26). It flawlessly delivered the 57th and 58th Beidou satellites into medium Earth orbit (MEO).

Developed by the esteemed China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), these satellites serve as crucial backups for the Beidou-3 system. By adding redundancy to the system, the operational risks associated with Beidou-3 are significantly reduced.

Impressively, the U.S. Space Force space domain awareness reported that the satellites were precisely inserted into orbits of 21,532 by 22,193 kilometers, inclined by 55 degrees.
