Catalogue of SpaceX Starlink Launch Events for February 2024

SpaceX has announced two upcoming Starlink launches set for February 2024. The first, Starlink Group 7-13, is scheduled for February 6 at 9:01 p.m. PST, launching from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The second, Starlink Group 6-39, is set to launch on February 11 at 1:00 a.m. EST, originating from Cape Canaveral Space Force Base in Florida. However, these dates and times are subject to change. SpaceX enthusiasts can view the launches via the company’s Twitter account.

Following each Starlink launch, the satellites ascend to a higher orbit, creating a spectacle in the sky that resembles a train of lights. This phenomenon has stirred curiosity among observers. To check if the ‘train’ of satellites will pass over a specific area, enthusiasts can use the Find Starlink website.

As of January 2024, Starlink comprises over 5,250 mass-produced small satellites in low Earth orbit. These satellites communicate with designated ground transceivers, providing internet access to more than two million subscribers worldwide. SpaceX’s vision for Starlink involves creating a global internet communication satellite constellation, particularly servicing regions where ground-based internet is either unreliable, unavailable, or expensive. The private company regularly launches 60 satellites at a time, with plans to eventually build up to 30,000 satellites.

Despite the excitement surrounding the Starlink satellites, they have not been without controversy. Astronomers have expressed concerns about the brightness of the satellites, which they claim interfere with professional astronomical observations. Images of the cosmos are being ‘photobombed’ by the satellites, potentially affecting our understanding of the universe. SpaceX has attempted to mitigate this issue, though astronomers argue that the measures taken are inadequate.

SpaceX’s Starlink project is a testament to the advances in spaceflight and satellite technology. However, it also highlights the need for careful consideration of the impact of such projects on other important scientific endeavors. The company’s ambitious plans for global internet coverage present both exciting opportunities and significant challenges, underscoring the complexity of pioneering technological initiatives in space.
