The UK Space Agency has launched a new internship programme aimed at young people interested in pursuing careers in the space sector. The initiative, known as the SPIN (Space Placements in Industry) scheme, seeks to provide practical experience and strengthen the space industry’s talent pipeline.
The UK Space Agency’s SPIN programme is primarily targeted at undergraduate students studying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects, who are considering a career in space science and technology. However, the opportunity is also open to those studying other subjects, reflecting the diverse range of skills required in the space industry.
The internships, which are funded by the UK Space Agency, will see successful applicants spend eight weeks over the summer working on space-related projects at various organisations across the country. The roles available cover a broad spectrum of disciplines within the sector, including technology, science, business and public engagement.
The projects range from developing technology for future space missions to analysing data from current missions, creating business models for space companies, and engaging the public with space science. This wide range of projects reflects the diversity and breadth of the UK’s space sector, and the numerous career paths that it offers.
As well as gaining hands-on experience, the interns will also receive mentoring from experienced professionals in the field and have the opportunity to network with other people working in the sector. This will provide them with valuable insights into the realities of working in the space industry, and help them to develop the skills and contacts they need to pursue a career in this area.
The UK Space Agency’s SPIN programme is part of a wider government initiative to grow the UK’s space sector. The government has set a target for the UK to capture 10% of the global space market by 2030, and is investing heavily in the sector to achieve this goal. Initiatives like the SPIN programme are key to developing the skilled workforce needed to drive the sector forward.
The SPIN programme is run by the UK Space Agency in partnership with the Satellite Applications Catapult, an innovation and technology company that supports the growth of the UK’s satellite applications industry. The Satellite Applications Catapult will play a key role in coordinating the internships and matching students with suitable projects and organisations.
Applications for the SPIN scheme are now open and will close on 1st May 2022. The internships will take place between June and September 2022. The initiative offers an exciting opportunity for young people to gain a foothold in the space industry and contribute to the UK’s ambitious space goals.
