Beyond the stars: A graduate joins the ranks of NASA’s latest astronaut cadre

Denis Tanya, a Northeastern University graduate, has been selected as a member of NASA’s new class of astronauts, marking a significant milestone in his career in space exploration. This achievement follows his substantial experience in the field, including his work as a flight test engineer for the United States Air Force.

Tanya is one of the ten candidates chosen from a pool of over 12,000 applicants, making this selection highly competitive. The new astronaut class will undergo two years of rigorous training at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The training program includes scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction in International Space Station systems, spacewalks, robotics, physiological training, T-38 jet proficiency, and Russian language lessons.

Tanya’s selection is largely credited to his impressive background in aerospace engineering. He graduated from Northeastern University with a bachelor’s degree in electrical and computer engineering before earning a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Michigan. He also served as a flight test engineer for the U.S. Air Force, where he conducted experimental flight tests on various aircraft.

After completing the training program, Tanya and his colleagues may be assigned to missions that could take them to the International Space Station, the Moon, or even Mars. NASA’s Artemis program aims to land the first woman and the next man on the Moon by 2024. Furthermore, NASA is working on the Artemis Base Camp, a sustainable outpost on the lunar surface that will serve as a stepping stone for future explorations to Mars.

Tanya’s selection as part of the new astronaut class underscores the importance of a strong educational background in STEM fields for space exploration. It also highlights the ongoing efforts of NASA to advance space exploration and sustain human presence beyond Earth. With NASA’s ambitious plans for the future, it’s an exciting time for Tanya and his fellow astronauts as they prepare for their potential journey to infinity and beyond.
