‘Bahubali’ Rocket Launches Heaviest Satellite, Making History for ISRO

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has made history by successfully launching its heaviest satellite, GSAT-11, into orbit using its powerful ‘Bahubali’ rocket. The launch took place from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana, which is commonly used for European satellite launches due to its proximity to the equator. The GSAT-11 satellite, which weighs approximately 5.8 tons, is the heaviest satellite that ISRO has ever launched.

The satellite was launched aboard the Ariane-5 VA246, a European heavy-lift launch vehicle. The ‘Bahubali’ rocket, alternatively known as the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III), was chosen for this mission due to its high load capacity. This successful launch is a significant achievement for India, marking a new era in the country’s space exploration history.

The GSAT-11 is a high-throughput communication satellite, which is expected to significantly improve broadband connectivity in India, particularly in rural areas. It is equipped with 40 transponders in the Ku-band and Ka-band frequencies, which are set to provide high bandwidth connectivity with up to 14 Gbps data transfer speed. The satellite will also aid in providing better internet connectivity in flights and ships.

The launch of GSAT-11 is part of ISRO’s ambitious plan to enhance India’s broadband capacity and improve digital communications across the country. The satellite is designed to operate for 15 years, which is expected to have a significant long-term impact on India’s digital landscape.

In addition to the GSAT-11, the Ariane-5 VA246 also carried the South Korean geostationary weather satellite, GEO-KOMPSAT-2A. Like the GSAT-11, the GEO-KOMPSAT-2A is also a heavy satellite, weighing around 3.5 tons. It is designed to monitor atmospheric conditions and ocean phenomena, thereby contributing to more accurate weather forecasts and better disaster preparedness.

The successful launch of GSAT-11 is a major milestone for ISRO. It not only demonstrates the organization’s capabilities in launching heavy satellites but also underscores its commitment to improving digital communications and connectivity in India. With plans to launch more heavy satellites, ISRO is well on its way to becoming a major player in the global space industry.
