Astronomers have discovered the most powerful Odd Radio Circle (ORC) ever observed, which strikingly resembles a galactic Venn diagram. ORCs are mysterious astronomical objects that were first identified in 2020. This latest discovery, named ORC4, has been detailed in a study published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
ORCs are unexplained astronomical phenomena that display as circular radio structures with no clear optical, infrared, or X-ray counterparts. Their origin remains a puzzle to scientists. The newly identified ORC4 is the largest and brightest ORC discovered to date, with a diameter that stretches almost five million light years. This makes it one of the largest individual structures ever identified by astronomers.
The ORC4 was spotted by using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), a radio telescope. It appears to be the result of two distinct, yet overlapping, circular lobes of radio emission. This overlapping pattern contributed to the comparison of the structure to a Venn diagram. The ASKAP data also revealed a faint galaxy near the center of the ORC4, which could potentially be the source of the radio emission.
Theories on the origin of ORCs range from the idea that they are the result of outbursts from radio galaxies, to the possibility they are the aftereffects of a cataclysmic event, such as the collision of two galaxies. However, none of these theories have been confirmed. The discovery of ORC4 will hopefully provide further insight into these elusive structures.
To better understand the nature of ORCs, the team plans to observe them using other wavelengths, such as X-ray and gamma-ray. They also hope to use the upcoming Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Telescope, a more powerful radio telescope set to begin operations in 2027, which may reveal more ORCs and provide deeper insights into these enigmatic cosmic structures.
Apart from the mysterious nature of ORCs, their discovery also underscores the vastness of the universe and our limited understanding of it. Despite significant advancements in technology and knowledge, the universe continues to surprise and puzzle researchers. These findings not only shed light on the cosmos but also stimulate curiosity and further research in the field of astronomy.
