Rocket Lab Completes Preparation of Photon Spacecraft for Eta Space LOXSAT Cryogenic Fuel Examination Mission

Rocket Lab, a leading aerospace company, has announced the completion of its Photon spacecraft for the Eta Space LOXSAT cryogenic fuel test mission. The mission aims to demonstrate the ability of liquid oxygen (LOX) to serve as an effective propellant in space. LOX is a type of cryogenic fuel, which is a high-energy fuel that must be stored at extremely low temperatures.

The Photon spacecraft is designed to provide a comprehensive platform for spacecraft operations, from launch to on-orbit activities. The LOXSAT mission will mark the first time the spacecraft has been used in a cryogenic fuel operation, marking a significant milestone for Rocket Lab.

The mission, which is set to launch from Rocket Lab’s New Zealand launch complex in early 2022, is part of NASA’s Tipping Point partnership program. This program aims to foster the development of commercial space capabilities and technologies that could be beneficial for future NASA missions.

Eta Space, an Orlando-based company specializing in in-space cryogenic fluid management, will lead the LOXSAT mission. The company believes that the use of LOX as an in-space propellant could revolutionize space travel, allowing for more efficient and flexible mission designs.

The LOXSAT mission will involve launching a small satellite equipped with a LOX tank into space. Once in orbit, the satellite will attempt to maintain the LOX in a liquid state for an extended period. The mission will also test the ability to transfer the LOX from one tank to another in microgravity, a critical capability for future long-duration space missions.

Rocket Lab’s Electron rocket, a reliable and cost-effective launch vehicle, will be used to launch the LOXSAT mission. Electron has a proven track record, having launched more than 100 satellites into space for a range of customers.

In addition to the LOXSAT mission, Rocket Lab is preparing for the upcoming launch of the CAPSTONE mission to the Moon for NASA. This mission will test new navigation technologies and the lunar Gateway’s unique, highly elliptical orbit.

Rocket Lab’s involvement in these missions underscores its growing role in advancing space exploration and technology. The successful execution of the LOXSAT mission could have far-reaching implications for future space missions, paving the way for more efficient and flexible designs.
