Hungarian firm 4iG Space and Defence has announced its readiness to invest in Axiom Space, a private company with plans to build the world’s first commercial space station. 4iG is already associated with space technologies through its subsidiary Hungaro DigiTel, which provides satellite communication services. The potential investment in Axiom Space would expand 4iG’s portfolio in the space sector and aligns with its strategy to become a significant player in the European space industry.
Axiom Space, founded by ex-NASA manager Michael Suffredini, has an ambitious vision to create a commercial space station that will serve as a hub for research, manufacturing, and tourism in low Earth orbit (LEO). The company has already secured a contract with NASA to attach its modules to the International Space Station (ISS) and, in the long term, aims to replace the ISS once it retires.
The space station envisioned by Axiom Space is designed to have several laboratories and living areas for astronauts, providing a platform for scientific research, technological development, and space tourism. The company also plans to conduct private astronaut missions to the ISS, with the first mission, Ax-1, scheduled for launch in January 2023.
4iG’s potential investment in Axiom Space comes at a time when the space industry is experiencing rapid growth. The commercial space sector, in particular, has seen significant interest and investment from multiple stakeholders. The involvement of private companies in space exploration and habitation is expected to bring innovation and open new opportunities in the space economy.
This move by 4iG also underscores the increasing role of European companies in the global space industry. The European Space Agency (ESA) has been actively encouraging private sector participation in space projects, and investments like these illustrate the growing importance of private-public partnerships in advancing space exploration and technology.
The specifics of the investment, such as the amount to be invested and the terms of the agreement, were not disclosed in the announcement. However, the investment is expected to support Axiom Space in its mission to pioneer a new era of commercial space habitation.
