22 Starlink Satellites to be Launched by SpaceX from Florida Today

SpaceX is set to deploy an additional 22 Starlink broadband satellites into orbit from Florida’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. This is a part of SpaceX’s ongoing mission to expand its Starlink megaconstellation, which is an initiative to provide global broadband coverage. The launch will take place during a 3.5-hour window that commences at 5:20 p.m. EDT.

The satellites will be launched aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, which is a two-stage vehicle designed for the reliable and safe transport of satellites and the Dragon spacecraft into orbit. Following the launch, the Falcon 9’s first stage will return to Earth approximately 8.5 minutes later, landing on the droneship ‘Just Read the Instructions’ in the Atlantic Ocean.

This Falcon 9 booster has had an impressive record, with this mission representing its 16th launch and landing. Interestingly, out of its 15 flights to date, ten have been Starlink missions. After the first stage’s return to Earth, the Falcon 9’s upper stage will continue on to carry the 22 Starlink satellites to low Earth orbit, where they will be deployed about 53 minutes after the liftoff.

As part of its ambitious space exploration and commercialization plans, SpaceX has been pursuing a rigorous launch schedule. It has already launched 60 orbital missions in 2024, which averages to one liftoff every 2.7 days. This rapid pace of launches underscores SpaceX’s commitment to advancing space technology and exploration.

A significant majority of these launches, specifically 43, have been dedicated to building out the Starlink megaconstellation. This satellite network currently comprises nearly 6,100 operational spacecraft, making it one of the most extensive satellite systems in the world. This network aims to provide high-speed internet connectivity across the globe, especially in remote and underserved areas where access to reliable broadband is limited.
