2023 in review: ESA’s JUICE mission to SpaceX’s Starship launches, another landmark year for space

2023 witnessed significant milestones in the field of space exploration, with several groundbreaking missions and achievements. From the European Space Agency’s (ESA) JUICE mission to NASA’s asteroid missions and SpaceX’s endeavors to launch the world’s largest rocket, the year marked another monumental period for space exploration.

One of the remarkable events took place in April, when the ESA’s flagship mission, JUICE (Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer), successfully launched into orbit aboard an Ariane 5 rocket from the spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. JUICE is on a journey across our solar system with the aim of reaching Jupiter by 2031. The mission’s primary objective is to explore the “Gas Giant” and study three of its icy moons – Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa – in search of habitable environments for extraterrestrial life forms. Notably, this marks the first time that Europe has embarked on a mission to a planet in the outer solar system beyond Mars.

In September, NASA’s Osiris-Rex spacecraft accomplished a seven-year-long mission by successfully bringing back the first samples from the Bennu asteroid. The samples were parachuted into the Utah desert in a canister that had traveled a staggering 100,000 km to return to Earth. This mission holds immense significance as the data gathered by Osiris-Rex will aid in developing strategies to deflect potentially harmful asteroids heading towards Earth. Particularly, Bennu is expected to come dangerously close to Earth in 2182, possibly posing a collision threat.

NASA’s dedication to studying asteroids was further evident in October when it launched a specially designed spacecraft to explore the enigmatic, metal-rich asteroid Psyche. This mission aims to uncover valuable insights about asteroids, which serve as preserved building blocks from the early stages of our solar system. Additionally, understanding asteroids better will enable humanity to protect itself in case of any potential threats and develop strategies to alter their trajectories if necessary. The Psyche spacecraft is projected to complete its 3.6 billion km journey through space and reach the asteroid in 2029.

Another significant event in 2023 was the development and testing of the world’s largest and most powerful rocket by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Although the rocket faced a setback in April when it exploded during its first launch attempt, it achieved success in November. Known as Starship, this colossal rocket has the capacity to lift up to 250 tons and accommodate 100 people for future missions to Mars. Elon Musk plans to utilize Starship initially for launching satellites into low-Earth orbit, including his own Starlinks, before embarking on manned missions.

In summary, the year 2023 witnessed remarkable advancements in space exploration, ranging from ESA’s JUICE mission to NASA’s asteroid missions and SpaceX’s ambitious rocket endeavors. These milestones have paved the way for further discoveries and have the potential to shape the future of space exploration and our understanding of the universe.
